Bayswater Marina, Auckland NZ

G’Day Mates,

Michael took the train to St. Louis today and made it to the airport for his flight.  He doesn’t have much connecting time, so we hope he will make all the flights required to arrive on Saturday afternoon, as planned.  He flies to San Francisco, Sydney Australia, and then to Auckland.  We don’t have cell phones, so it looks like we will just have to meet up when we meet up!

Here’s an historic film clip (1910) that shows kids jumping into a Hawaiian ocean bay.  We have seen this sport often including here in NZ off the bridge over the Waitangi River, and here at Bayswater off the old wharf. It looks just like this but in full color–even in this “modern age” some things never change!  The song playing, “Kamawae,” is being peformed by Toots Paka’s Hawaiians, a vaudeville troupe that helped to popularize Hawaiian music in the mainland U.S. in the early 20th century.  “Kama wae” means someone is finicky or difficult to please.

warm regards,

Michael and Sharon
